Welcome Luncheon for Myanmar Consul-General Daw Myat Thuzar Than

It is our great pleasure to welcome the new Consul-General Daw Myat Thuzar Than of the Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Hong Kong and Macau SAR. Our Chamber is honoured to organize a Welcome Luncheon for new Consul-General on 16 March, 2018 at the Dynasty Club in Wan Chai. (Front row, 3rd from right) Consul-General Daw Myat Thuzar Than of the Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Hong Kong and Macau SAR Our Board and Committee members attended the Welcome Luncheon. We also took this opportunity to celebrate the coming of Spring and we look forward to working with the Consulate office more closely in the years ahead.

Gems and Precious Stones Now Subject to Export Licences

An export licence is now required for a list of 3,345 products before they could be exported from Myanmar. Gems and precious stones, along with animal products, forestry products, unprocessed mining goods, vehicles, heavy machinery, paddy, oil-producing plants, seeds, chemicals, fertilisers, explosives and antiques, are included in the list. For the full list (partly in Burmese) of the newly regulated products, see the official notification on the Ministry of Commerce’s website. A separate list detailing the goods that are exempt from an export licence is due to be issued in line with Myanmar’s WTO commitments, though a specific date for its release has not yet been announced. Belt & Road Lunch Talk Series

Belt & Road Lunch Talk Series was successfully organized by Silk Road Economic Development Research Center at The Foreign Correspondents’ Club, Hong Kong on 7 March, 2018. From ancient silk road to recent globalization, trading between countries becomes more frequent. Dr Thomas Chan, Honorary Professor of Chu Hai College of Higher Education, was invited to share about the reshaping of Eurasian trade flows and logistics system. The Q&A session allowed attendees to deepen their understanding of Dr Chan's sharing and Chamber's Chairman Richard Tao attended to exchange views. ASEAN Chambers Chinese New Year Gathering

To increase the interaction between chambers of ASEAN countries and mingle with members of other ASEAN chambers in Hong Kong, HKMMCCI co-hosted an ASEAN Chambers Chinese New Year Gathering, which was held on 6 March at JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, Admiralty. The event was attended by over 200 guests, including 18 ASEAN Diplomats and officials in Hong Kong from different ASEAN countries. Participants enjoyed the happy hours and Lo Hei followed by a dinner buffet. One of the highlights is the Lo Hei session for good fortune. We also take this opportunity to sponsor 6 Myanmar students to participate, which offered an excellent way for students to have a taste of the real business situations, make industry contacts and develop professional relationships before graduation. Overseas Joint Venture Businesses Approved to Export 22 types of value added products

The government has approved export for 22 types of value added products by foreign joint venture businesses, according to the notice by the Ministry of Commerce on 22 January. Foreign businesses in Myanmar can now form joint ventures with local companies for the purpose of exporting a range of products, including cosmetics, purified metals, wood-based furniture, and ceramic tableware and kitchenware. The change is part of a government move to boost exports of value-added finished products in a bid to reduce the country’s reliance on raw material export. The allowed items are meat, crops, plastics and pulp, ceramic materials, ceramic materials, pots, cups, plates and other household materials; chemicals, compressed gases, agricultural products, cosmetics, animal food, wood based furniture and purified metals. Daily Minimum Wage Set to Increase to US$3.5

The daily minimum wage in Myanmar is set to increase from Kyat 3,600 (US$2.6) to Kyat 4,800 (US$3.5) following a formal endorsement by the union government. The announcement was made after a recent meeting of the National Committee on Fixing the Minimum Wage. The wage increase will apply to all businesses with 10 or more employees. Unless widely opposed, the wage increase will be confirmed within the next 60 days. In accordance with the Minimum Wage Law, enacted in 2013, the national committee was formed to revise the minimum wage rate every two years. Source: Eleven Myanmar
